Xwejni Bay

A shallow bay beside the Xwejni salt pans on the north coast of Gozo. The shore is pebble and rock, and the pans beside it are still worked by hand.

Xwejni Bay, Malta
Right now

Exposed today. The wind is NW at 30 km/h.

Most people come for the salt pans beside the bay. They are cut into the shore in shallow rectangles and have been worked by the same families for generations. The salt is still scraped off by hand in late summer.

The swimming is off pebble and flat rock in shallow, clear water, with the round Xwejni rock standing offshore. There is parking on the road immediately behind and nothing else, so bring what you need. It is a short walk west from Marsalforn along the coast road.

Which winds this bay can take

It is sheltered from the east-north-east round to the west-north-west. There is no open water on those bearings for a wind to build a swell across. It is open to the north-west round to the north-east, where the sea runs for kilometres before it reaches this shore.

Measured as metres of open water on each bearing out from the shore. This is the bay’s own geography and it does not change; whether it is swimmable this afternoon is the reading at the top of the page, which also weighs how hard the wind is actually blowing.

Struck through means it is not there. Facilities at a Maltese bay are seasonal more often than not, so treat summer as the best case.
