Where to stay for nightlife

Staying where the night is, and how much sleep you are trading.

If you are coming for the nightlife, you want to walk home rather than argue over a fare at four in the morning. That means St Julian’s. It means being honest with yourself about how close to Paceville you want to be.

The same room is often a different price on each site

Comparing across the booking sites is worth the two minutes it takes.

How close to Paceville

Paceville

You can walk home from every bar

You will not sleep before four at weekends, and probably not midweek in summer either. The hostels here are built for exactly that and priced accordingly.

If the night out is the entire point of the trip, this is the honest choice. If it is not, stay further along.

What Paceville is like

Ten minutes along

Spinola Bay

Far enough that the noise drops away, close enough that you still walk home. The restaurants are better and the rooms cost more.

This is the compromise most people should be making, and the one they work out on the second trip rather than the first.

Valletta

A quieter night out

Wine bars and small rooms fill the side streets. They finish by about one in the morning. It is the grown-up alternative, and after dark it is a different city.

The ferry stops in the evening, so moving between Valletta and St Julian’s late at night means a taxi. Factor that in before you book.

The trade-off by distance

In Paceville
You can walk home from every bar. You will not sleep before four at weekends, and possibly not midweek in summer. Cheap. The hostels here are built for it.
Spinola Bay and around
Ten minutes’ walk, noticeably quieter, better restaurants. The best compromise for most people.
Sliema
Twenty to thirty minutes on foot along the front, or a short taxi. Quiet enough to sleep, close enough to get back easily.
Valletta
A completely different night: wine bars and small places rather than clubs, finished by about one. Getting between the two after the ferry stops means a taxi.
Noise carries further than the map shows

Sound bounces off the valley St Julian’s sits in, and summer open-air events add to it. Plenty of people book “near Paceville” for convenience and discover they meant it. Read recent reviews specifically for noise.
