Ramla is the largest beach in Gozo and the one everything else on the island is measured against. The sand is a deep red-brown and the valley behind it is still farmland. A statue of the Madonna stands in the middle of the beach.
Calypso’s Cave looks down from the western ridge. The cave itself has been closed for years, but the view from the path above it is worth the walk. The bay is wide open to the north. A northerly stirs up the sand, the water turns brown and the red flags go up.
Which winds this bay can take
It is sheltered from the east-north-east round to the west-north-west. There is no open water on those bearings for a wind to build a swell across. It is open to the north-west round to the north-east, where the sea runs for kilometres before it reaches this shore.

Measured as metres of open water on each bearing out from the shore. This is the bay’s own geography and it does not change; whether it is swimmable this afternoon is the reading at the top of the page, which also weighs how hard the wind is actually blowing.

Struck through means it is not there. Facilities at a Maltese bay are seasonal more often than not, so treat summer as the best case.
