Tours and day trips

Guided tours and day trips, with what each one includes.

Malta is small, English-speaking and well signposted, which makes it one of the easier places in Europe to manage without a guide. Worth saying plainly on a page like this: for a lot of tours here, the honest answer is that you don’t need one.

Where a tour does earn its price, it’s almost always solving transport, timing or expertise rather than access.

When a tour is the right answer

Reason one

A tour handles the transport

Comino is boat-only. Gozo means a ferry and a drive. The northern bays and the western cliffs are poorly served by buses.

In each case you are paying somebody to handle the travel rather than to talk you through the sights. That is a perfectly good reason to book one.

Reason two

A tour handles the timing

Getting to the Blue Lagoon before the crowd, or to Dingli for sunset, is a scheduling problem someone else can solve for you.

A private charter does this best, because you choose the departure time rather than fitting around a schedule.

Valletta, Mdina and the beaches

Valletta and Mdina are both small, walkable and entirely navigable alone. Beaches need no tour at all, because every bay on the islands is public.

A coach tour billed as covering the whole island in a day is mostly a coach.

What you can book

The main options

Day trips
These run full days across Malta and Gozo, with pickup included. Ask how many hotels they collect from before yours.
Gozo tours
This is where a tour earns its money, because it takes the ferry and the driving off your hands.
Blue Lagoon and Comino
You can only get there by boat. You also need a free landing pass booked in advance before you set foot on the shore.
Food tours and classes
This is the best way into a cuisine that mostly does not appear on restaurant menus.
Attraction tickets
Only a handful need buying ahead. The Hypogeum is the one that does.
Private charter
For a group this is the best value on the water, because you choose the departure time.
Two questions before booking anything

What is the maximum group size, and how many pickups happen before mine? Neither is usually volunteered, and both decide what the day is like. Operators running small groups say so. If no maximum is mentioned, assume it is large.

If you would rather see what is running before you start asking those questions, you can browse guided tours in Malta through Klook.
