Gozo farmhouses

Converted farmhouses with private pools, and why Gozo does them best.

The converted Gozitan farmhouse is the best thing to stay in on either island. Thick limestone walls, a courtyard, usually a private pool, and a silence Malta can’t offer anywhere.

What you are booking

What they are

Converted stone farmhouses

Old working farmhouses built from globigerina limestone, with walls thick enough to keep the heat out and a courtyard in the middle. Most have been converted with a private pool.

They sleep anything from two to twelve, which makes them as good for a couple as for a family group.

You will need a car

Almost all of them sit outside a village. Gozo‘s buses exist but they’re infrequent, and a farmhouse without a car is isolating rather than peaceful.

Check whether the pool is heated too. In July it makes no difference. In April or October it makes all of it, and a private pool and a heated pool are different products.

Where they are

Xagħra, Nadur and Għarb

Those three, along with Żebbuġ and San Lawrenz, are the usual areas. All inland, all quiet, all within a short drive of the coast.

Xlendi and Marsalforn are the seaside resorts. Busier, more to walk to, less of the silence you came for.

Planning a Gozo trip

Before you book

Do not plan daily trips to Malta

People book a farmhouse meaning to see Malta every day, then find the ferry makes that a chore. Every trip across involves the Ċirkewwa crossing and, in summer, a queue for it.

Either treat Gozo as the holiday, or split the trip and stay on both islands. Plan flights with a generous margin either way.

The pool is often unheated
Irrelevant in July and it matters a great deal in April or October. Ask, because a private pool and a heated pool are different products.

Winter is cold indoors
Stone holds the cold. Confirm there is real heating if you are coming between December and March.
