Wied il-Għasri

A deep, narrow gorge cut into the north coast of Gozo, with a small sandy floor at the end of it.

Wied il-Għasri, Malta
Right now

Exposed today. The wind is NW at 32 km/h.

The gorge is a crack in the north coast of Gozo, a few metres wide. Cliffs rise either side, with a small floor of sand and pebble at the end. A flight of steps cut into the rock is the only way down.

In calm weather this is one of the best swims in the islands and the visibility inside the channel is remarkable. In anything with north in it the sea funnels straight up the gorge and it becomes dangerous, which is not obvious from the top. There is nothing at the bottom and no easy way out in a hurry.

Which winds this bay can take

It is sheltered from the north-east round to the north-west. There is no open water on those bearings for a wind to build a swell across. It is open to the north-north-west round to the north-north-east, where the sea runs for kilometres before it reaches this shore.

Measured as metres of open water on each bearing out from the shore. This is the bay’s own geography and it does not change; whether it is swimmable this afternoon is the reading at the top of the page, which also weighs how hard the wind is actually blowing.
