Marsalforn is a town rather than a beach. The swimming is spread along the front rather than concentrated on the small pebble and sand strip in the middle. Most people walk west towards Qbajjar and the salt pans, where the rock is flat and the water is clearer.
It is the practical base for the north of Gozo. Hotels, restaurants, a dive school and the buses to Victoria all sit within a few streets of the water. The bay faces north-east and it is exposed when the wind sits in that quarter, which is worth checking before committing the day to it.

It is sheltered from the north-east round to the north-north-west. There is no open water on those bearings for a wind to build a swell across. It is open to the north to the north-north-east, where the sea runs for kilometres before it reaches this shore.
