How the Maltese year works
Village festas
Every parish keeps its patron saint’s feast, and the dates move year to year. Somewhere on the islands is celebrating most weekends from May to September.
This is the part of the calendar that no printed guide gets right, which is why ours is checked against parish sources each season.
Annual events
Fourteen public holidays
Five mark points in Maltese history and nine are religious feasts. On each one the banks and most shops close and the buses run a Sunday timetable.
Two of them, Good Friday and Christmas, close almost everything including many restaurants.
All fourteen
The four big fixtures
Carnival falls before Lent, the fireworks festival is in spring, the jazz festival is in July and Notte Bianca is in October.
All four move within their month and are announced a few months ahead, so confirm dates before booking flights.
