Science in the City takes over Valletta on 25 and 26 September 2026. It is Malta’s European Researchers’ Night.
Streets, squares and courtyards fill with demonstrations, talks and performances, and most of it is outdoors and free.
What it is
Researchers from the University of Malta and elsewhere bring their work out of the lab and onto the street.
Expect hands-on demonstrations, robots, theatre, live experiments and a good deal aimed squarely at children.
The festival runs in four parts: pre-festival events, the street festival, a performance strand and a virtual programme.
The performance side is at Sala San Duminku in Valletta and the Catholic Institute in Floriana. Those are ticketed.
Going
The street programme is free and needs no booking. Ticketed performances are sold through the festival’s own site.
It runs into the evening on both nights, which is the better time to go. It is cooler, and the lighting is part of it.
Take children. This is the one festival on the calendar built around them rather than tolerating them.
Getting there
Valletta is easiest by bus or by the harbour ferries from Sliema and the Three Cities.
Driving in carries the CVA charge on the Friday, and streets close for the street festival. Park outside the walls.
Check the last ferry back before you settle in, because the programme runs late.
Around it
The Valletta Guitar Festival is on 10 to 12 September and Notte Bianca follows on 3 October.
Confirm the programme on the festival site before you travel. Times and venues are set close to the date.
