The inner bay at Marsaskala is a swimming spot rather than a beach. The promenade runs around it, ladders drop from the rock at intervals, and the whole thing is overlooked by cafés and flats.
The bay is long, narrow and almost completely enclosed. The water stays flat in nearly any weather, which makes it one of the safest places on this coast for a casual swim. It also means the water moves slowly, and after a still week it is not the clearest. Everything is a step away, and parking is easier at the far end than in the middle.
Which winds this bay can take
It is sheltered from the east round to the north-east. There is no open water on those bearings for a wind to build a swell across. A wind out of the east-north-east has some water to work with but not the full run.

Measured as metres of open water on each bearing out from the shore. This is the bay’s own geography and it does not change; whether it is swimmable this afternoon is the reading at the top of the page, which also weighs how hard the wind is actually blowing.
