Right now

Sheltered today. The wind is WNW at 16 km/h.

A small inlet on the north shore of St Paul’s Bay below the Xemxija ridge, with a short ladder off the rock into deep water. It is a locals’ swim: no sand, no kiosk and a handful of people at a time.

The inlet sits well inside the bay, so almost nothing reaches it except a north-easterly and it stays flat through most of the summer. Park on the road above and walk the last stretch down. There is no shade, which is the only real limit on the middle of the day.

Which winds this bay can take

It is sheltered from the west-south-west round to the north-north-east. There is no open water on those bearings for a wind to build a swell across. It is open to the east-north-east, where the sea runs for kilometres before it reaches this shore. A wind out of the north-east and the east round to the south-west has some water to work with but not the full run.

Measured as metres of open water on each bearing out from the shore. This is the bay’s own geography and it does not change; whether it is swimmable this afternoon is the reading at the top of the page, which also weighs how hard the wind is actually blowing.
