The archaeology museum is closed, the nature museum is free, and one ticket covers two sites in Xagħra.

What is open on Gozo right now

Gozo is having an awkward year for museums and a good one for everything else. If you are crossing for a day and building it around the Ċittadella, it is worth knowing what is open before you buy a ticket.

A day trip covers the ferry and the driving

Gozo is awkward without a car, and a booked trip removes both problems.

The archaeology museum is shut

The Gozo Museum of Archaeology has closed while it becomes the Gozo Museum, a bigger and slower project than a refurbishment. The shop is still open and still sells Hypogeum tickets, which is useful in its own right because those are hard to come by. The Ċittadella combined ticket is unchanged, so you are not paying for a door that is locked.

What is open in the Ċittadella

The view over Marsalforn in Gozo
Gozo in August: the coast is busy, the museums are not.

Gran Castello Historic House and the Old Prison are both open at five euro each. People often skip the Old Prison and then talk about it afterwards.

The reason is the graffiti cut into the cell walls by prisoners. The Gozo Nature Museum is free, which makes it the easiest yes on the island.

Ġgantija is why most people come

Ġgantija at Xagħra, older than the pyramids and open all week.

The temples at Xagħra are older than the pyramids and the ticket costs ten euro. Many people miss that the same ticket includes Ta’ Kola Windmill, which is a few minutes away in the same village. Doing them separately means paying twice for something you already own.

Dwejra Tower opens on weekdays only

Dwejra Tower on the west coast opens Monday to Friday between nine and two. Those hours suit weekdays rather than weekends, when most visitors come. If the tower matters to you, come on a weekday or view it from outside.

Getting there and back

The car ferry from Ċirkewwa runs through the night. You pay on the way back rather than on the way out, which surprises people the first time.

There is also a fast passenger ferry from the Valletta waterfront, which skips the drive north entirely. Both are covered in our ferry guide.
