A fair amount of Malta is behind hoarding at the moment. Several of the sites people travel here to see are closed and one has reopened.
A couple are closed in ways that are easy to miss until you arrive at the door. This page lists what changed and how it affects your plans.
Gozo has lost its archaeology museum for now
The Gozo Museum of Archaeology has closed while it becomes the Gozo Museum, which is a larger project rather than a refurbishment. The shop stays open and it still sells Hypogeum tickets, so the building is not shut to the public entirely. The Ċittadella combined ticket has not changed, so you are not paying for something you can no longer see.
Two Valletta and Birgu sites are shut
The Malta Maritime Museum in Birgu is temporarily closed, and the Main Guard in Valletta is closed for conservation work. Villa Guardamanġa is closed too while a long restoration goes on.
People miss that last one most often. It is the house the Queen lived in as a naval wife, so visitors go looking for it.
Fort St Elmo has opened a section back up
From the first of August the museum section covering the early Knights and the Great Siege is open again. Normal admission prices apply.
The First World War display in another section remains closed. Fort St Elmo is large enough that losing one display does not spoil the visit, but it is worth knowing which half you are getting.
The Palace closes its State Rooms on four afternoons
The Throne Room at the Grand Master’s Palace is closed until further notice. Beyond that, the State Rooms will not open until half past one on 25 September, 28 October, 18 November and 2 December.
On those mornings the Armoury is the only part you can reach. If you have a fixed day in Valletta and one of those dates is it, go in the afternoon.
Comino’s tower is scaffolded
Santa Marija Tower, the one on the skyline in every photograph of Comino, is closed for restoration. It normally opens at weekends and whenever the flag is flying.
The battery below it is still open and still free. The walk from the Blue Lagoon is worth doing anyway, because the battery stays empty while the bay does not.
Two smaller closures
Borġ in-Nadur is closed to visitors because of road works, and it is normally part of the same ticket as Għar Dalam. That ticket currently buys one site rather than two, which is worth weighing before you pay for it. Villa Frere is closed from July until September.
One rule at every site
Last admission at every Heritage Malta site is thirty minutes before closing. They all shut completely on 1 January, Good Friday, and 24, 25 and 31 December. We keep the full price list and the current closures on one page and check it against the source rather than from memory.
