Il-Kalanka

A small rock inlet on the Delimara peninsula, a few minutes past St Peter's Pool. The water is deep and clear and there is no shade at all.

Right now

Sheltered today. The wind is NNW at 17 km/h.

Il-Kalanka is a narrow notch in the Delimara rock, a few minutes beyond St Peter’s Pool. Most people queueing for the Pool never walk the extra distance. The water is deep from the edge and exceptionally clear.

There is no sand, no shade and nothing to buy. Entry is off the rock, and getting out again takes a little thought when there is any movement in the water. It is open to the east, so a morning easterly rules it out entirely.

Which winds this bay can take

It is sheltered from the south-east round to the east-north-east. There is no open water on those bearings for a wind to build a swell across. It is open to the east to the east-south-east, where the sea runs for kilometres before it reaches this shore.

Measured as metres of open water on each bearing out from the shore. This is the bay’s own geography and it does not change; whether it is swimmable this afternoon is the reading at the top of the page, which also weighs how hard the wind is actually blowing.
