Golden Bay

A wide sandy bay on the north-west coast, with a road down to it and a hotel above. It is the easiest big beach to reach and it is busy accordingly.

Golden Bay, Malta
Right now

Mostly calm. The wind is NNW at 17 km/h.

The bay sits at the bottom of a valley inside the Majjistral park. The ground behind it is field and scrub rather than buildings. A road runs all the way down to the sand and there is a car park at the top. It is the one large beach on the islands with no walk involved.

That is also why it fills. By the middle of a summer morning the car park is full and the sand in front of the kiosks is taken. The far end, away from the steps, stays quieter. The sand shelves gently and the water stays shallow a long way out, which suits children. There is no natural shade of any kind, so an umbrella is not optional in July.

Which winds this bay can take

It is sheltered from the west-north-west round to the south. There is no open water on those bearings for a wind to build a swell across. It is open to the south-west round to the west, where the sea runs for kilometres before it reaches this shore. A wind out of the south-south-west has some water to work with but not the full run.

Measured as metres of open water on each bearing out from the shore. This is the bay’s own geography and it does not change; whether it is swimmable this afternoon is the reading at the top of the page, which also weighs how hard the wind is actually blowing.

Struck through means it is not there. Facilities at a Maltese bay are seasonal more often than not, so treat summer as the best case.
