The name means mouth of the wind and the bay earns it. It sits under a wall of blue clay on the west coast. A footpath drops steeply from the end of the Baħrija road. The last section is loose underfoot and unpleasant after rain.
There is nothing at the bottom: no kiosk, no toilet and no shade. The shore is pebble and rock and the water is deep and cold. It is the most remote swim on the main island, and it is the one most often reached by boat instead.
This bay is reached by boatAlmost everybody arrives here on a booked trip rather than on foot.

Which winds this bay can take
It is sheltered from the north-west round to the south-west. There is no open water on those bearings for a wind to build a swell across. It is open to the west to the west-north-west, where the sea runs for kilometres before it reaches this shore. A wind out of the west-south-west has some water to work with but not the full run.

Measured as metres of open water on each bearing out from the shore. This is the bay’s own geography and it does not change; whether it is swimmable this afternoon is the reading at the top of the page, which also weighs how hard the wind is actually blowing.

Struck through means it is not there. Facilities at a Maltese bay are seasonal more often than not, so treat summer as the best case.
