Ġnejna is the third of the west-coast bays, after Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa. It is the only one with a road running all the way to the sand. Boathouses are cut into the clay slope on the southern side and terraced fields come down almost to the beach.
The sand is coarse and the bottom shelves quickly. Because the road makes it easy, the small car park fills early on summer weekends and people then park along the approach lane. The clay slopes either side are unstable and there are signs asking people to keep off them.
Which winds this bay can take
It is sheltered from the north-north-east round to the west-north-west. There is no open water on those bearings for a wind to build a swell across. It is open to the north-west, where the sea runs for kilometres before it reaches this shore. A wind out of the north-north-west to the north has some water to work with but not the full run.

Measured as metres of open water on each bearing out from the shore. This is the bay’s own geography and it does not change; whether it is swimmable this afternoon is the reading at the top of the page, which also weighs how hard the wind is actually blowing.

Struck through means it is not there. Facilities at a Maltese bay are seasonal more often than not, so treat summer as the best case.
