Blue Lagoon

The channel between Comino and Cominotto, where the water is shallow, white-bottomed and the colour everybody comes for.

Blue Lagoon, Malta
Right now

Exposed today. The wind is NW at 31 km/h.

Comino has no cars and almost nobody living on it, so everything at the lagoon arrives by boat, including the people. Ferries run from Ċirkewwa in Malta and from Mġarr in Gozo through the summer, and the crossing takes about twenty minutes.

The channel is only a few metres deep over white sand, and the white sand under shallow water gives it that colour. The strip of sand goes early, so most people end up on the rock either side of it. Go on the first boat of the day or the last one. Between ten and four in July and August this is as busy as anywhere in the islands.

Boats run to the lagoon through the summer from Ċirkewwa, Sliema and St Paul’s Bay. Take the first sailing of the day if you can. You can book a Blue Lagoon boat trip through Klook.

Which winds this bay can take

It is sheltered from the north round to the south-south-east and the west-south-west round to the west-north-west. There is no open water on those bearings for a wind to build a swell across. It is open to the south-south-west to the south-west, where the sea runs for kilometres before it reaches this shore. A wind out of the south and the north-west to the north-north-west has some water to work with but not the full run.

Measured as metres of open water on each bearing out from the shore. This is the bay’s own geography and it does not change; whether it is swimmable this afternoon is the reading at the top of the page, which also weighs how hard the wind is actually blowing.

Struck through means it is not there. Facilities at a Maltese bay are seasonal more often than not, so treat summer as the best case.
