Malta has three public holidays left in 2026: Tuesday 8 December, Sunday 13 December and Friday 25 December. There is none in November.
The three dates
- Tuesday 8 December: the feast of the Immaculate Conception.
- Sunday 13 December: Republic Day.
- Friday 25 December: Christmas Day.
Tuesday 8 December
Banks, government offices, post offices and schools close. Most shops close, and the buses run a Sunday timetable.
Monday 7 December is a normal working day, so a four-day break needs one day of leave.
Four parishes hold their feast on the same day: Cospicua, Ħamrun, Mqabba and Tal-Ibraġ. Expect crowds near those churches. The dates are on the feast calendar and in the feasts left this year.
Sunday 13 December
Republic Day falls on a Sunday, so there is no day off in the working week. Employees gain the equivalent hours as extra annual leave.
Three feasts fall on the same day: Gudja, Mtarfa and St Paul’s Bay.
Friday 25 December
Christmas Day gives a three-day weekend, from Friday to Sunday. Many restaurants close, so plan food and travel in advance.
New Year
31 December is a Thursday. 1 January 2027 is a Friday and a public holiday.
The full list of dates and what closes is on the public holidays page.
