September gets the attention. October is the one worth booking.
The sea is still warm and the crowds have gone. You can walk around a city at two in the afternoon without hiding from the sun.
The sea holds its heat
The water lags the air by about two months, so October swimming is closer to July than to April.
Locals swim well into November. The beaches are empty by then and the kiosks have shut, so take your own water.
Walking weather
The coast paths and the cliff walks are miserable in August. In October they are the best thing on the islands.
The countryside greens up within about two weeks of the first rain, after looking dead all summer.
There is still no shade on any of those paths, so an early start is worth keeping.
The first storms arrive
Autumn rain here comes in short heavy bursts rather than a grey week.
Streets flood for an hour and then it clears. Keep one indoor day loose in the plan and you lose nothing.
Storms also cancel boat trips at short notice, so check the morning of rather than the day before.
What you give up
- The festas are finished. Only 8 fall in October and none after that.
- Some boat trips stop and the Comino ferries thin out.
- Beach kiosks and seaside restaurants start closing for the winter.
If you are coming mainly for the Blue Lagoon, come earlier in the year.
October 2026 is the exception
This year the quiet month is not quiet. Four large events land in four weeks.
- 3 October: Notte Bianca, Valletta open all night and free.
- 17 October: the Rolex Middle Sea Race starts from the Grand Harbour.
- 24 October: Junior Eurovision at the MFCC in Taβ Qali.
- 28 October to 1 November: the Three Palaces Festival.
Rooms in the week of the 24th are the tightest. Book early if you are coming for any of it.
