Virtu Ferries runs a high-speed catamaran service between Malta and Pozzallo, on the southern tip of Sicily.

The crossing takes about 1 hour 45 minutes, run by two ships, the Saint John Paul II and the Jean de la Valette.

How often it runs

There are several sailings a day in each direction, spread across the morning, afternoon and evening. The exact times change with the season, so check the operator’s own schedule before booking.

Taking a car

The service takes cars and motorcycles as well as foot passengers. That makes it a practical way to bring a hire car onto Sicily rather than picking one up there.

Why people use it

It is the fastest way off the islands without flying. Catania and its airport are under two hours’ drive from Pozzallo.

A Sicily side trip is possible as a long day. An overnight makes for a calmer one.

It connects with the wider ferry network, alongside the Gozo Channel and the Valletta harbour ferries.
