Rinella sits just outside the mouth of the Grand Harbour at Kalkara, with Fort Rinella on the ground above it. There is a short strip of sand and rock either side, and ships pass close enough to watch from the water.
It is tucked inside the harbour approaches, so very little open water lies in front of it. That makes it one of the calmest swims in the south-east. Dogs are allowed. There is parking on the road above and nothing else, so bring what you need.
Which winds this bay can take
It is sheltered from the north-north-west round to the west. There is no open water on those bearings for a wind to build a swell across. A wind out of the west-north-west to the north-west has some water to work with but not the full run.

Measured as metres of open water on each bearing out from the shore. This is the bay’s own geography and it does not change; whether it is swimmable this afternoon is the reading at the top of the page, which also weighs how hard the wind is actually blowing.

Struck through means it is not there. Facilities at a Maltese bay are seasonal more often than not, so treat summer as the best case.
