A watchtower stands on the ridge above the bay and gives it its name. The shore below is rock rather than sand. You swim by going in off a ledge into deep, clear water, with Comino and Gozo in front of you.
There is space to leave a car near the tower and nothing else at all. Dogs are allowed. Only a westerly reaches this corner of the ridge with any force. It is a dependable choice on days when the west coast is too rough.
It is sheltered from the north-west round to the west-south-west. There is no open water on those bearings for a wind to build a swell across. It is open to the west, where the sea runs for kilometres before it reaches this shore. A wind out of the west-north-west has some water to work with but not the full run.
