Heritage Malta runs most of the big sites on both islands, and sells a pass that covers them.
Whether it saves you money comes down to one question: how many sites will you really get to?
What the pass covers
- The museums and archaeological sites in state hands, on both Malta and Gozo.
- The Grandmaster’s Palace and Fort St Elmo in Valletta.
- The Lascaris War Rooms.
- Ħaġar Qim, Mnajdra, Tarxien and Għar Dalam.
- Ġgantija and the Victoria museums in Gozo.
The Hypogeum is the exception. It is booked and paid for separately and sells out weeks ahead.
Privately run sites are not covered either. Casa Rocca Piccola, the Mdina cathedral museum and the Din l-Art Ħelwa towers all charge separately.
Where the line falls
Three or four sites is roughly the point where the pass starts to win.
Below that, single tickets are cheaper. Above it, the pass wins by more with every extra site.
Work it out before you buy the first ticket, not after two of them.
The pass runs for a fixed period from first use, so buying it on arrival wastes days you spend on a beach.
Be honest about your day
Most people plan five sites and manage two.
The sites are spread across both islands. The temples are nowhere near Valletta, and the Gozo ones need a ferry crossing on top.
In July and August the afternoons are too hot to walk between anything, which cuts a realistic day to two or three stops.
Winter cuts it a different way. Sites close mid-afternoon, so a late start costs you a whole visit.
Other ways to pay less
Some sites already share one ticket: Ħaġar Qim with Mnajdra, and Ġgantija with Ta’ Kola Windmill.
Children, students and over-60s pay reduced rates on singles. The bands are set out in the ticket prices piece.
Residents pay less than visitors at Heritage Malta sites, and there is a separate annual card for people living here.
Buying online usually saves a queue rather than money.
What needs no ticket at all
Every church except two, every bastion, every garden and every beach.
A week here can be full without a single paid entry.
The pass only makes sense if museums are the reason you came. If they are a rainy afternoon, buy singles.
