The sand at St George’s was imported and the bay was reshaped around it. It is now the only sand for several kilometres in either direction. Hotels stand on three sides and Paceville begins at the top of the road.
The water is shallow and the bay is small, so on a July weekend the sand disappears under people by the middle of the morning. Everything is there: sunbeds, food, water sports, toilets and a bus stop at the top of the hill. It is a beach for convenience rather than for scenery, and it is honest about that.

Which winds this bay can take
It is sheltered from the east round to the north-east. There is no open water on those bearings for a wind to build a swell across. It is open to the east-north-east, where the sea runs for kilometres before it reaches this shore.
