The sand here was brought in rather than laid down by the sea, replacing a shore that was originally rock. It has been Birżebbuġa’s town beach ever since. It is shallow and it stays shallow, which is why families with small children use it.
It is also one of the few beaches in Malta that stays usable in a strong wind. Very little open water lies in front of it. The freeport cranes are in view along one side and people either mind that or they do not. Parking, toilets, somewhere to eat and a bus stop are all within a couple of minutes of the sand.
Which winds this bay can take
It is sheltered from the south round to the north-east. There is no open water on those bearings for a wind to build a swell across. A wind out of the east-north-east round to the south-south-east has some water to work with but not the full run.

Measured as metres of open water on each bearing out from the shore. This is the bay’s own geography and it does not change; whether it is swimmable this afternoon is the reading at the top of the page, which also weighs how hard the wind is actually blowing.

Struck through means it is not there. Facilities at a Maltese bay are seasonal more often than not, so treat summer as the best case.
