Malta Airport has one terminal and one main security lane.
That makes it simple to find your way around. It also means everyone leaving the island passes the same point.
Two hours before departure is right between June and September. Ninety minutes is enough for the rest of the year.
The two rushes
The airport fills twice a day.
The first is between 05:00 and 08:00. The early flights to London, Rome and the German cities all leave within an hour or so of each other.
The second is between 16:00 and 19:00.
Security can take 30 to 45 minutes inside those windows in July and August. Outside them it is usually under fifteen.
If your flight leaves between 09:00 and 15:00 you have the quietest part of the day and you do not need the full two hours.
Check-in closes earlier than you think
Bag drop usually shuts 40 to 60 minutes before departure, and some airlines make it 90.
It is set by the airline and not by the airport, so check your booking rather than assuming.
Once bag drop closes it does not reopen. Most people who miss a flight here missed bag drop, not the gate.
Hand luggage only removes the whole problem, which explains how many people leave Malta travelling light.
Getting there
The airport is at Luqa, in the middle of the island. Nothing is more than about 45 minutes away.
The road through Marsa is slow between 07:00 and 09:00, which is the same window as the first flight rush.
Add half an hour to the journey if you are travelling through it.
For anything leaving before 07:00, the transport is the harder problem than the queue. There is a separate piece on the early morning flights.
Once you are through
Airside is small. One main departures hall, a handful of shops, a few places to eat.
Gates are a short walk, and there is no train or long corridor to allow for.
There is no point arriving three hours early. You will spend the extra hour sitting in the same seat.
Arriving rather than leaving
Passport control on arrival is quick outside the summer peak and slow inside it, for the same reason.
Baggage reclaim runs one or two belts. Bags usually arrive within twenty minutes.
Where to check
Malta International Airport publishes live departures on its own site.
Your airline sets the bag drop time and the gate closing time. Those two decide when you have to be there.
