The 47th Rolex Middle Sea Race leaves the Grand Harbour at 11am on Saturday 17 October. Watching from land costs nothing.
The start line runs between the Saluting Battery below the Upper Barrakka Gardens and Fort St Angelo in Birgu. The fleet sails a lap of the harbour before it heads out to sea, so you see the boats twice.
Where to stand
- The Upper Barrakka Gardens. Free, and directly above the line. Get there by ten for a place at the wall.
- The Lower Barrakka Gardens. Quieter, and it looks down the harbour towards the entrance.
- The Birgu and Senglea waterfronts. Fewer people, and you see the fleet from the other side.
The rest of the week
A shorter coastal race around Malta runs on Wednesday 14 October at 10am. It is also visible from land and draws far fewer spectators. The prize giving is on Saturday 24 October at midday.
There is more on the 606 mile course, the fleet and last year’s result in our piece on the Rolex Middle Sea Race.
